Job summary

The Gateway Region YMCA is seeking a part-time lifeguard to supervise pool areas and respond quickly to emergencies. This role requires certification and provides the chance to help ensure a safe aquatic environment for members and guests.

You must be at least 15 years old, physically ready, and capable of following YMCA safety protocols and reporting procedures. A strong team mindset and reliability are essential for success.

Qualifications

• Must be a certified lifeguard.
• Must be at least 15 years of age.
• Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
• Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.

Responsibilities

• Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.
• Reviews emergency procedures and responds to emergencies per YMCA policies; completes related reports.
• Responds to challenges with timely solutions.
• Applies safety rules for the pool and aquatic area.
• Remains calm under pressure and when challenged.
• Maintains records required by YMCA and state health code.
• Performs equipment checks and ensures availability.
• Checks for hazardous conditions on arrival.
• Performs chemical testing when not guarding and takes action.

• Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.
• Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the “safe-in-six” model; completes related reports as required.
• Responds to challenges with possible solutions in a timely manner.
• Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
• Remains calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged by others.
• Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state health department code.
• Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
• Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
• Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action.
