Job summary

The Gateway Region YMCA is seeking a part-time Lifeguard to maintain active surveillance of the pool area and enforce safety policies. You will respond to emergencies, perform routine equipment checks, and keep accurate records as required by YMCA and state codes.

Must be a certified lifeguard and at least 15 years old, with the ability to stay calm under pressure and maintain certification readiness. This role offers part-time seasonal hours and a supportive aquatic team environment.

Qualifications

• Must be a certified lifeguard.
• Must be at least 15 years of age.
• Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
• Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.

Responsibilities

• Maintains active surveillance of the pool area and reviews procedures.
• Responds to emergencies immediately per YMCA policies and completes required reports.
• Keeps safety rules, policies, and guidelines for pool and aquatic area.
• Maintains accurate records as required by YMCA and state health codes.
• Performs equipment checks and ensures required equipment is available.
• Performs chemical testing when not guarding and takes appropriate action.

Description

• Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.
• Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the "safe-in-six" model; completes related reports as required.
• Responds to challenges with possible solutions in a timely manner.
• Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
• Remains calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged by others.
• Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state health department code.
• Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
• Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
• Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action.
