Job summary

The Gateway Region YMCA is seeking a part-time seasonal lifeguard to supervise the pool area, respond to emergencies, and ensure safety according to YMCA policies. The role requires certification, eligibility to work at 15 years of age, and the ability to stay alert and professional under pressure.

You will perform inspections, maintain records, conduct chemical testing when not guarding, and support equipment checks to keep the aquatic area safe for members and guests.

Qualifications

• Must be a certified lifeguard.
• Must be at least 15 years of age.
• Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
• Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.

Responsibilities

• Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.
• Reviews emergency procedures and responds to emergencies per YMCA policies; completes related reports.
• Responds to challenges with timely solutions.
• Applies safety rules for the pool and aquatic area.
• Remains calm and objective under pressure.
• Maintains accurate records as required by YMCA and state health codes.
• Performs equipment checks and ensures equipment is available as needed.
• Checks the pool for hazards on arrival.
• Performs chemical testing when not guarding and takes appropriate action.

Description

• Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.
• Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the “safe-in-six” model; completes related reports as required.
• Responds to challenges with possible solutions in a timely manner.
• Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
• Remains calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged by others.
• Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state health department code.
• Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
• Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
• Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action.
