Job description

The YMCA is seeking Lifeguards - In Training. Paid training and Lifeguard certification, flexible schedule, free Y membership, and more with this fun role at the Y! Must be a strong swimmer capable of passing a swim skills assessment.

The In Training salary range for this position is $13.00-$13.57 per hour. The full-time compensation package includes a wide range of benefits (medical, dental, life, disability, and more), generous paid time off, and free membership. Part-time benefits will vary.

1. Job Summary:

This Lifeguard (In Training) will shadow certified lifeguards while working to obtain the required certification within 90 days of hire. The incumbent will provide excellent customer service in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes member safety and satisfaction, in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

2. Essential Functions:
  1. Shadow and assist lifeguards, learning programming and emergency procedures.
  2. Understand and communicate policies and procedures for the pool, body of water, and whirlpool.
3. Relationships:

This position reports to the Aquatics Director/Aquatics Supervisor, who reports to Senior Aquatics Management. The incumbent interacts regularly with their supervisor, staff, volunteers, and participants.

4. Qualifications:

Required:

  • Minimum age of 15.
  • Certification required within 90 days of hire.
  • Patience and effective communication skills with all ages and levels of swimmers.
  • Ability to swim in shallow and deep water, and tread water (Stage 5 level swimming skill), or be physically able to perform all required lifeguard skills.
  • Dedication to member safety and alignment with YMCA’s mission and philosophy.
5. Work Conditions:
  • Must remain in the pool area at all times.
  • Support body weight in water for children or adults.
  • Remain alert in a warm environment with air temperatures of 80°F or higher.
  • Recognize and address hazardous situations calmly and effectively.
  • Communicate verbally, projecting voice across distances in normal and loud situations.
  • Perform physical tasks including walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50 pounds in a warm pool environment.
