Lifeguard-In Training (Security)

The YMCA is seeking Lifeguards - In Training. This role offers paid training and Lifeguard certification, flexible scheduling, free Y membership, and more. Must be a strong swimmer capable of passing a swim skills assessment.

The salary range for this position is $13.00-$13.57 per hour. Full-time employees receive a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, life, disability insurance, generous paid time off, and free membership. Part-time benefits vary.

1. Job Summary:

This Lifeguard (In Training) will shadow certified lifeguards while working to obtain the required certification within 90 days of hire. The role focuses on providing excellent customer service in a safe, enjoyable environment that promotes member safety and satisfaction, in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

2. Essential Functions:

• Shadow and assist lifeguards, learning programming and emergency procedures.
• Understand and communicate policies and procedures for the pool, body of water, and whirlpool.

3. Relationships:

This position reports to the Aquatics Director/Aquatics Supervisor, who reports to Senior Aquatics Management. The incumbent interacts regularly with supervisors, staff, volunteers, and participants.

4. Qualifications:

• Minimum age of 15.
• Certification required within 90 days of hire.
• Patience and effective communication skills with all ages and swimmers.
• Ability to swim in shallow and deep water, tread water (Stage 5 level), or perform all required lifeguard skills.
• Dedicated to member safety and aligned with YMCA's mission and philosophy.

5. Work Conditions:

• Must remain in the pool area at all times.
• Support body weight in water.
• Remain alert in warm environments (80+ degrees).
• Recognize and address hazards calmly and effectively.
• Communicate verbally, projecting voice across distances.
• Perform physical tasks including walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
