TTUHSC El Paso Sanchez Unit is seeking a Licensed Vocational Nurse to provide direct patient care within a correctional facility. The role operates under a registered nurse direction, using established nursing protocols to assess, treat, and document patient conditions.

Position requires Texas LVN licensure, CPR, and graduation from an approved nursing program, with NCLEX-PN on the first attempt for new graduates.

Qualifications

  • Current Vocational Nurse License in Texas or eligible transfer/within 120 days of applying.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Graduated from an approved accredited nursing program.
  • New graduates must pass the NCLEX-PN on the first attempt.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct care to patients within the nursing Scope of Practice.
  • Performs sick call, assess and treat acute problems using nursing protocols.
  • Performs nursing rounds for patients in the segregated housing.
  • Administers medications as ordered via oral, subcutaneous, intramuscular, topical, and ophthalmic routes.
  • Proficient documenting patient findings in the electronic health records (EHR).

Employees in this classification are responsible for performing awide variety of patient care activities in an assigned correctionalfacility. They function within their legal scope of practice and inaccordance with the policies and procedures of the organization andpractice setting. Work is performed under the direction of aregistered nurse as part of a total correctional managed healthcare team in providing safe and competent care to patients.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Provides direct care to patients within the nursing Scope ofPractice.
  • Performs sick call, assess and treat acute problems usingnursing protocols and refer patients to an advanced medicalprovider, behavioral health provider, or dentist asappropriate.
  • Performs nursing rounds for patients in the segregatedhousing.
  • Administers medications as ordered via oral, subcutaneous,intramuscular, topical, and ophthalmic routes.
  • Uses established tools for gathering subjective and objectivedata, referring abnormal findings to the medical, dental, orbehavioral health provider.
  • Collects laboratory specimens and prepare specimens forlaboratory processing.
  • Respond to emergencies and render care to stabilize the patientand/or transport to appropriate level of care.
  • Handles properly the use of equipment, materials, andsupplies.
  • Communicates proficiently in order to create positive rapportwith patients, coworkers, officers, and civilians.
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships in amultidisciplinary environment.
  • Has knowledge of state regulations (HIPPA/PHI).
  • Maintains certifications and required educationalcompliance.
  • Proficient documenting patient findings in the electronichealth records (EHR).

Pay Statement

Compensation is commensurate upon the qualifications of theindividual selected and budgetary guidelines of the hiringdepartment, as well as the institutional pay plan. For additionalinformation, please reference the institutional pay plan website at https://app4.ttuhsc.edu/payplan .

Required Qualifications

Current Vocational Nurse License in the State of Texas, or abilityto transfer license to Texas, or scheduled to complete a program ofvocational nursing within 120 days of applying for a position .Current CPR certification.
