Job summary

City of Flagstaff is seeking a Library Specialist to provide direct patron services, assist with computers and research, and interpret library policies. The role leads adult and/or youth programming, may coordinate venues/presenters, and helps develop library collections.

The position may serve as shift lead and provide supervision in the absence of a Supervisor, contributing to community programs and services in Flagstaff, AZ.

Job description

The Library Specialist provides direct service to library patrons by assisting with computers and research, answering questions, and interpreting library policies. This position plans, develops, and leads adult and/or youth programming, which may include coordinating venues and presenters, preparing appropriate content and materials, and developing promotional materials. The Library Specialist also supports the development of library collections by assessing needs, selecting and deselecting materials, and placing orders. In addition, this position may serve as a shift lead and provide supervision in the absence of a Supervisor.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.
  • Tracks and reports statistics for program area.
  • Performs related duties, as assigned.
When assigned toEast Flagstaff Community Library
  • Provides excellent customer service to all library patrons.
  • Assists patrons with computers and research, answers questions, interprets policies in order to answer patron questions.
  • Handles patron complaints/comments, emergencies, and difficult situations according to library policy (including writing incident reports).
  • Maintains and distributes community information.
  • Selects and deselects materials by assessing library's needs and ordering appropriate materials.
  • Performs Reader’s Advisory services.
  • Plans, develops, and prepares programming (adult and/or youth, may include off site programming) including scheduling venue, preparing developmentally appropriate content and leading the program or booking and vetting the presenter, creating flyers or other promotional items, purchasing appropriate materials, and hosting programs. May also conduct early literacy story times.
  • Checks materials in and out, issues library cards, sells Friends of the Library merchandise, accepts payments for lost/damaged items; may clear accounts; run reports, and empty book drops.
  • Places holds and finds materials for patrons.
  • Assesses and markets library programs and services in order to provide the most relevant and needed services to the public.
  • Helps staff with grant planning and assists with writing and implementation when needed.
  • Assists patrons with use of the library online catalog (OPAC), online subscription databases and other electronic resources, the Internet, printing, and general computer use issues.
  • Assists with Inter-Library Loan requests, as needed.
  • Processes library materials for circulation.
  • Sorts donations at the Supervisor’s discretion..
  • Promotes East Flagstaff Community Library programs and services. May write press releases, create flyers, and update on-line calendars.
  • Acts as a shift lead and provides supervision in absence of a Supervisor.
  • Assists in communicating day to day tasks to volunteers as assigned by a Librarian or Supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associates degree or two (2) years of college level coursework.
  • Two (2) years of experience working in a library including one year working with computers and on-line resources, including library circulation software.
  • Any combination of relevant education and relevant experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Desired Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in a related field.
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible employment in the library field.
  • Knowledge of the local community and its resources.
  • Fluency in a language other than English, particularly Dine, Hopi, and/or Spanish.
  • Experience in early childhood education, storytimes particularly for ages birth through 5 years, ability to offer bilingual storytimes a plus.
  • Experience planning, developing, and preparing library programming.
  • Experience talking about library services to groups.
  • Basic knowledge of and experience with collection development/maintenance.
Other Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity.
  • Must pass background, criminal history, and fingerprint check.
  • Basic understanding of communication and customer service principles. Demonstrates competent written and verbal communication.
