Job summary

Jersey City Free Public Library (JCFPL) seeks a full-time Security Guard for the Earl Morgan Branch. Under the Director of Facilities, you will patrol, safeguard the building, and protect people and property from harm, fire, theft, and unauthorized entry.

This role requires a valid SORA license within 45 days of employment. The position includes 35 hours per week with early morning to evening shifts, including some evenings and weekends as needed.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of security measures in detaining persons.
• Knowledge of fire prevention and safety practices.
• Knowledge of safeguarding persons and property on public property.
• Ability to follow oral and written directions accurately.
• Ability to maintain order among groups and individuals on site.
• Ability to stay cool and decisive in emergencies.
• Ability to work harmoniously with staff, visitors and others.

Responsibilities

• Inspect areas for fire hazards and ensure fire extinguishers are present and functional.
• Monitor surveillance screens and detect unauthorized persons or activities.
• Control entry and flow of people entering and leaving the building.
• Observe for unusual packages and assess potential security risks.
• Remove disruptive individuals after verbal warnings.
• Restrict or detain violent or disorderly persons as needed.
• Evacuate occupants and alert others during emergencies.
