Job summary

Jersey City Free Public Library (JCFPL) is hiring a Building Maintenance Worker for the Miller Branch. The role is full-time with a 35-hour week (6am–8pm coverage as scheduled) to support cleaning, basic repairs, and maintenance duties across the library facilities.

Responsibilities include cleaning, minor repairs, inventory/supplies distribution, and ensuring security of premises. Strong English communication and ability to perform physically demanding tasks are required.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of use and minor adjustment to sweepers and vacuum cleaners.
• Ability to perform minor repairs to heating, electrical, and plumbing systems.
• Ability to lift and move moderately heavy objects and organize cleaning work.
• Ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English well enough to perform duties; ASL/Braille may be acceptable forms of communication.
• Knowledge of maintaining order among groups of people on public property.
• Ability to note significant conditions by observation and take proper action.

Responsibilities

• Cleans rooms, offices, public areas and restrooms.
• Washes and cleans windows; floors (sweeps, washes, strips, waxes, and polish); rugs; may paint in branches.
• May repair heating, electrical, or plumbing systems.
• Empties wastebaskets, indoors and outdoors; assists with removal and storage of books and items.
• Distributes supplies to branches.
• May trim hedges, rake leaves, and trim driveway/sidewalk edges.
• Shovels snow and spreads salt/sand on icy surfaces.
• Visually inspects windows, doors, locks and fixtures for security.
