Job summary

The South Burlington Public Library in Vermont is seeking a Library Substitute to carry out routine Circulation Desk duties and assist patrons of all ages in locating library materials. You will greet visitors, check items in and out, and help with holds and catalog searches.

The role emphasizes friendly service, accuracy, and the ability to learn library procedures and computer skills. Prior library or bookstore experience and fluency in another language are preferred.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent with one year customer service experience required.
• Ability to deal tactfully, courteously, and effectively with the public and other employees.
• Strong communication skills; familiarity with Canva is preferred.
• Ability to learn and apply new computer skills.
• Ability to learn library procedures and apply policies.
• Ability to work with a high degree of accuracy, efficiency, and dependability.
• Prior experience working with adults in a library or bookstore setting is preferred.
• Bachelor’s degree with one year of customer service experience, or equivalent, is preferred.
• Fluency in a language other than English is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Greets patrons and helps in finding information and recommending books as needed.
• Provides patron assistance in locating Library materials, using the online catalog.
• Shares accurate information about library programs and services with the public.
• Performs routine circulation functions accurately, including checking items in and out, registering new patrons, updating patron information, and placing holds.
• Assists patrons in the use of library computers and equipment.
• Assists with administrative duties as needed.
• Answers telephone and directs calls.
• Shelves materials as needed.
• Reads shelves to ensure materials are in proper order.
• Enforces library policies inan appropriate manner.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
