Job summary

Granville County Public Library is seeking a part-time Circulation Clerk to support daily operations under general supervision. You will assist patrons with services, check materials in/out, process holds, registrations, and help maintain a safe, welcoming environment in an indoor library setting.

You will perform routine tasks using library systems, respond to inquiries, handle phone calls, and help with shelving, mail processing, programs, displays, and general office functions.

Qualifications

Job description

Under general supervision, performs part-time circulation and customer service duties in support of the library's mission. Assists patrons with library services, circulation transactions, holds processing, overdue materials management, shelving preparation, and maintaining a safe, welcoming environment for library users and staff.

This position provides direct customer service by responding to patron inquiries, assisting with library equipment and resources, processing library materials, and supporting daily circulation operations. Work involves frequent interaction with the public and is performed in an indoor library setting under the supervision of the Head of Circulation. Performance is evaluated based on customer service effectiveness, accuracy, reliability, and adherence to library procedures.

  • Provides courteous customer service and assists patrons with locating materials, answering questions, using library equipment, and accessing library resources.
  • Performs circulation functions, including checking materials in and out using library software and computer systems.
  • Processes patron registrations and issues new or replacement library cards.
  • Manages holds and overdue materials, including contacting patrons and conducting item searches as assigned.
  • Prepares and organizes materials for shelving and assists with maintaining accurate shelf order.
  • Answers telephone inquiries and directs calls appropriately.
  • Assists with emptying book drops, organizing collections, and maintaining orderly public areas.
  • Supports mail processing, library programs, displays, and other operational activities.
  • Operates standard office and library equipment, including computers, cash registers, copiers, and related technology.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of basic library circulation procedures, practices, and customer service standards.
  • Familiarity with books, authors, and library resources.
  • Ability to use computers, library software, office equipment, and audiovisual technology.
  • Basic understanding of business math, English, and office procedures.
  • Knowledge of public library operations and services.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with patrons, staff, and volunteers.
  • Ability to maintain accuracy while performing data entry and clerical tasks.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to perform activities such as standing, walking, reaching, bending, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and repetitive hand movements.
  • Ability to perform light physical work, including lifting up to 20 pounds occasionally and up to 10 pounds frequently.
  • Visual ability sufficient to read library materials, maintain records, process transactions, and operate computer equipment.
