Job summary

Fayetteville Public Library is seeking a Maintenance Worker to join the Facilities team. This full-time, on-site position covers routine maintenance of mechanical systems, safety compliance, groundskeeping, and event support.

You will coordinate with the Director of Facilities and Sustainability and respond to security and emergency needs as they arise. The role requires a high school diploma or GED with related experience, strong communication, and the ability to work flexible hours including

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED with 3 years related experience or training, or equivalent mix.
• Proficient with construction tools, power tools, and light lawn equipment.
• Intermediate reading skills for safety rules, blueprints, and manuals.
• Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
• Basic math for measurements and quantities; able to plan and prioritize tasks.
• Ability to learn emergency procedures and follow safety protocols.
• Basic computer use including email and reporting.
• Mechanical aptitude to operate equipment and troubleshoot minor issues.
• Customer service skills to interact with library patrons and staff.
• Ability to handle chemicals safely (bleach, wax, etc.).

Responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance on mechanical equipment and book conveyors.
• Assist with repairs and upgrades to electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
• Manage grounds maintenance, landscaping, and lawn care.
• Coordinate event logistics and meeting room setup with the Building Services team.
• Respond to police, fire, and security communications during all hours.
• Oversee recycling and promote safety and security practices.
• Help implement safety plans and emergency procedures.
• Prepare maintenance action plans (painting, carpet cleaning, etc.).
• Serve as senior staff member and delegate as assigned within Facilities.
• Perform custodial duties as needed and respond to emergencies.
• Maintain building security and assist with closing procedures.
• Train new staff and supervise volunteers on special projects.
• Communicate effectively with customers about services and policies.
• Monitor security and report incidents with accuracy and timeliness.
• Display time management, organization, and problem-solving skills.
