Job summary

Milton Keynes City Council is seeking a part-time Library Assistant to join our Public Libraries team, working five hours per week on Saturdays from 9.00am to 2.00pm. The role is site-based, with DBS checks and a requirement for a full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.

You'll provide frontline customer service, assist with story times and community events, and help residents access library resources and digital services while maintaining a welcoming environment.

We're recruiting a part-time Library Assistant to join our Public Libraries team at Milton Keynes City Council, working five hours per week. Our libraries provide welcoming, inclusive spaces where residents can access books, digital resources, information, learning opportunities and community support. Every day, we help people of all ages improve literacy, build digital skills, access reliable information and connect with their local community. By supporting education, wellbeing and lifelong learning, we play an important role in helping residents thrive and creating stronger, more connected communities across Milton Keynes. As a Library Assistant, you'll be one of the friendly faces of our library service. You'll help create a positive experience for everyone who visits, supporting residents to access library resources, use our services and take part in activities that encourage reading, learning and community involvement. This part-time role is ideal for someone looking to make a meaningful contribution to their community while working five hours per week. Whether you're helping someone discover their next great read, access online services or take part in a local event, you'll make a real difference to the people who use our libraries. Working five hours per week on Saturdays from 9.00am to 2.00pm Site-Based role This is a Site-Based role, and you'll be expected to work from the designated workplace.   • Providing frontline customer service at library service points and supporting activities such as story times and community events.
  • Helping to promote library services and maintaining positive relationships with residents from across the community.
  • Advising customers on the use of library materials, digital resources and equipment.
  • Supporting the maintenance of a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for customers and colleagues.
  • Working flexibly across library locations and supporting service delivery where required.
  • GCSE English and Maths at grade A-C or equivalent, or relevant experience that demonstrates strong literacy and numeracy skills.
  • A confident communicator who enjoys speaking with people from a wide range of backgrounds and delivering excellent customer service.
  • Experience using information technology, including Microsoft Office and other digital systems, or the ability to learn new systems quickly.
  • Someone who can remain organised and effective in a busy environment while managing several tasks at the same time.
  • You'll be comfortable working independently when required while also contributing positively as part of a team.
  • With a practical approach to problem solving, you'll be able to identify issues, take appropriate action and seek support when needed.
  • Full UK Driving Licence and access to a vehicle To be successful in this role, you'll need a full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle. If we offer you the role, we'll ask you to provide evidence of your driving licence and vehicle insurance, including cover for business use. We're unable to confirm an appointment until these documents are received. As part of the pre-employment checks, should you be offered the role, we'll carry out a Basic Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
