Job summary

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Office of General Counsel, Prosecution Division, seeks a diligent Legal Assistant 1 to support attorneys with filings, document review, and case processing in a fast-paced environment. You will prepare legal filings, manage exhibits, and assist with office operations in Harrisburg.

Full-time hours 8:00 AM–4:30 PM, with a 60-minute lunch, and potential telework after six months to a PA‑based location.

The Office of General Counsel is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented individual to provide clerical and legal office support within the Prosecution Division of the Department of State. This role allows you to work closely with attorneys while preparing a variety of daily filings that are crucial to protecting the health and safety of the public. This role supports attorneys by preparing legal documents, reviewing case information, and helping keep office operations organized and accurate. As a Legal Assistant 1, you will perform the following duties:

  • Legal Support: Prepare filings, review documents, and assist with case processing tasks
  • Case Review: Analyze incoming matters to determine steps needed for proper handling
  • System Entry: Submit filings and update case information in the case management system, ensuring records are accurate, complete, and current.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 60-minute lunch.
  • Telework:You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, after 6 months of employment. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
  • Three years of responsible clerical, enforcement or investigative work; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

This position is subject to the provisions of a collective bargaining agreement or memorandum of understanding.

You must be eligible for selection in accordance with merit system employment regulations.

Promotion Without Examination (PWOE):
  • Class Restrictions for Promotion Without Examination Only - You must have or have held regular civil service status in one of the following classifications:
    • Clerical Assistant 2
    • We will also consider applications from current Commonwealth employees in pay scale group ST03 for which there is a logical occupational, functional, or career developmental relationship to this position. All applicants must meet the minimum experience and training requirements.
  • Employees who previously held regular civil service status in the job title of the position being filled are also eligible for promotion without examination.
  • The promotion without examination requirements are issued in accordance with merit system employment regulations.
  • Meritorious service is defined as (a) the absence of any discipline above the level of written reprimand during the 12 months preceding the closing date of the posting, and (b) the last regular or probationary performance evaluation showing an overall rating of satisfactory or higher.
  • Applicants must have a minimum of one year in the next lower classes by the posting closing date with no break in service.
