South Carolina’s most experienced and diverse Education Law firm, Halligan Mahoney & Williams, P.A., is a mid-sized law firm committed to providing high quality and responsive legal services. We are seeking a detail-oriented, proactive Legal Assistant to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity to work alongside experienced legal professionals in a respectful and supportive environment. Our practice primarily focuses on education law, labor and employment matters, student matters, special education, and other areas impacting educational organizations.

Key Responsibilities:

• Telephone & Email Communication: Answer incoming telephone calls promptly and professionally. Review attorney email communications; print, respond, and redirect as needed. Save matter-related emails and correspondence in the firm’s document management system according to firm policy.

• Document Preparation & Filing: Type and format a variety of legal documents, including correspondence, memoranda of law, subpoenas, pleadings, briefs, contracts, state and federal forms, and newsletters. Create and revise documents from both verbal and written media. Electronically file legal documents with courts and assist with trial preparation as needed.

• File Management: Open, organize, and maintain electronic and physical case files in accordance with firm procedures to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and accessibility.

• Calendar Management: Maintain attorney case calendars to track deadlines, court appearances, and filing dates. Provide timely reminders and coordinate with attorneys to ensure adequate preparation for upcoming deadlines and events.

• Communication: Communicate clearly and professionally with clients, courts, and others on behalf of attorneys.

• Confidentiality & Professionalism: Handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion, maintaining a high level of professionalism and ethical standards at all times.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma required and 2 years of general clerical and/or administrative experience. Bachelor’s degree or Paralegal certification and/or prior experience working in a law firm preferred.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office products required.

• Minimum typing speed of 60 words per minute.

• Strong organizational and time management skills.

• Above average verbal and written communication skills required to communicate with attorneys, clients, outside organizations and internal staff.

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

• High level of adaptability and resourceful problem-solving skills.

• Basic knowledge of legal terminology preferred.

• Familiarity with state and federal court proceedings and filing systems preferred.

• Experience with legal document production and document management software a plus.
