Job summary

Frederick Community College is seeking a Learning Assistant I/II/III: Peer/Professional Tutor STEM to support students, colleagues and faculty both on campus and online.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent for LAI/II.
  • College-level coursework with a B or better (LAI/II).
  • 2 years prior employment/volunteer/internship (LAI/II).
  • Associate Degree or equivalent experience (LAIII).

Responsibilities

  • Tutor students individually or in groups on campus or online.
  • Engage diverse learners and adapt to varied cultural backgrounds.
  • Monitor learning environment and assist with learning tech.
  • Provide technical/software support to students.
  • Maintain records and assist with administrative tasks.
  • Refer students to campus services as needed.
  • Lead study sessions or workshops (LAIII).
  • Act as resource and mentor to LAI/II colleagues.

Job Title: Learning Assistant I/II/III: Peer/Professional Tutor STEM

Pay Rate: $15.45 - $18.78 per hour (depending on placement)

Position Type: Part-time Variable Schedule

Position Summary

The Learning Assistant provides learning support to students, colleagues and faculty. Support services may include tutoring, monitoring a lab/learning space, and/or assisting with learning technology/software. This position must work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. This position must use varying styles and approaches that reflect an understanding and acceptance of the role of culture in a diverse, multicultural workplace.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Tutor students individually, in small groups, or embedded in courses both on campus or online.
  2. Engage and encourage students to become confident, successful, and active learners by engaging them directly in ways that respond to the diversity of students’ cultural backgrounds, academic needs, and learning styles.
  3. Help monitor the learning environment, and interpret needed protocols for students.
  4. Provide technical/software support to students.
  5. Perform record-keeping and administrative tasks as directed.
  6. Encourage communication between student and instructor.
  7. Refer students to other appropriate services on campus, as needed.
  8. Act as a resource and mentor to colleagues classified as Learning Assistant I/II. (LAIII)
  9. Design and lead in-class presentations, orientations, supplemental instruction groups, review sessions, and/or study skills workshops. (LAIII)
  10. Coach students in academic study skills. (LAIII)
  11. Assist the STEM Learning Center Coordinator with researching and updating learning center materials and resources, as requested. (LAIII)
  12. Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications

1. High School Diploma (LAI/II)
2. College-level course completion with a grade of B or greater (LAI/II)
3. Prior employment (2 years for LAIII), volunteer or internship (LAI/II)
4. Associate Degree in appropriate area or completion of appropriate courses or certificates or documented successful equivalent experience (LAIII)

1. Associate Degree in appropriate area or completion of appropriate courses or certificates or documented successful equivalent experience (LAII)
2. Bachelor’s Degree in appropriate area (LAIII)
3. Faculty recommendations and/or professional references that pertain to the specific department or learning center subject areas (LAI/II)
4. Experience using Microsoft Office 365 and Blackboard LMS
5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills
6. Bilingual in Spanish
