Job summary

Volkert, Inc. is seeking an experienced Transportation Project Engineer for our Gulf Region offices across Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee.

The role focuses on leading roadway design and traffic engineering tasks, with responsibilities spanning from concept through construction documentation. You will work with EIs, designers, and subconsultants to deliver projects on schedule and within budget, while applying DOT standards and QA/QC procedures.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program (M.S. a plus)
• 4–10+ years of relevant experience in roadway design, traffic engineering, and/or transportation planning
• PE license
• Experience with DOT design methods, plan preparation, standards, and specifications, with proven skills in meeting DOT expectations, schedules, and budgets
• Familiarity with state and FHWA design standards, MUTCD, and AASHTO guidelines
• Proficiency with OpenRoads Designer and/or MicroStation
• Proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
• Self-motivated and dependable, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team to meet deadlines and deliver high-quality work
• Able to maintain project schedules, which may require occasional extended hours and overnight travel
• Effective verbal and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening to ensure a safe and productive work environment

Responsibilities

• Lead or assist in the design of transportation projects, including roadway geometry, drainage, traffic signals, signing and pavement marking, ITS, and maintenance of traffic plans
• Conduct traffic operations analyses and prepare traffic impact, safety, corridor, and long-range planning studies
• Prepare construction plans, specifications, quantities, cost estimates, technical reports, and memorandums
• Perform detailed engineering calculations and apply established DOT standards and practices to solve problems
• Direct EIs, designers, and interns, and coordinate with subconsultants to deliver projects on schedule, within budget, and in line with company QA/QC standards
• Participate in client meetings, business development efforts, and team initiatives
• Perform other duties as assigned
