Job summary

Volkert Inc. is seeking a Transportation Project Engineer to support a Gulf Region located in Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee. The role requires 4+ years in traffic/ roadway design and a PE license.

You will lead or assist in highway projects, perform traffic analyses, prepare plans and reports, and coordinate with subconsultants while adhering to DOT standards and QA/QC expectations. Occasional overtime and travel may be required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program (M.S. a plus)
• 4-10+ years of relevant experience in roadway design, traffic engineering, and/or transportation planning
• PE license
• Experience with DOT design methods, plan preparation, standards, and specifications, with proven skills in meeting DOT expectations, schedules, and budgets
• Familiarity with state and FHWA design standards, MUTCD, and AASHTO guidelines
• Proficiency with OpenRoads Designer and/or MicroStation
• Proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
• Self-motivated and dependable, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team to meet deadlines and deliver high-quality work
• Able to maintain project schedules, which may require occasional extended hours and overnight travel
• Effective verbal and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening to ensure a safe and productive work environment. Volkert adheres to federal guidelines, which may include testing for substances such as marijuana. Please note that federal regulations may differ from state-specific guidelines
• Valid driver's license and a satisfactory motor vehicle report (MVR)

Responsibilities

• Lead or assist in the design of transportation projects, including roadway geometry, drainage, traffic signals, signing and pavement marking, ITS, and maintenance of traffic plans
• Conduct traffic operations analyses and prepare traffic impact, safety, corridor, and long-range planning studies
• Prepare construction plans, specifications, quantities, cost estimates, technical reports, and memorandums
• Perform detailed engineering calculations and apply established DOT standards and practices to solve problems
• Direct EIs, designers, and interns, and coordinate with subconsultants to deliver projects on schedule, within budget, and in line with company QA/QC standards
• Participate in client meetings, business development efforts, and team initiatives
• Perform other duties as assigned
