Job summary

Sargent & Lundy in Lexington, KY is seeking a Lead Substation Engineer to directly apply expertise in protective relaying and controls systems for HV and EHV substations. The role includes designing upgrades, developing relay philosophies, mentoring engineers, and coordinating with clients and vendors.

The position offers a hybrid work arrangement in Lexington, with three days in-office and two remote days, and a generous relocation package depending on location.

Qualifications

• BS degree from ABET-accredited engineering program.
• 12+ years experience designing substations at 138kV and above.
• PE license.
• Experience liaising with firms/clients in lead roles.
• Experience in relay calculations documentation.
• Experience with design techniques and blueprint production.
• Proficiency with SKM/ETAP/ASPEN/CDEGS or vendor software.
• Familiarity with NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, ANSI.
• Experience with protective relay equipment (SEL, ABB, GE, Areva, Basler).
• Proficient in MS Office; strong written and verbal skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead substation engineering design efforts and reviews.
• Create calculations, designs, specifications for modifications and upgrades.
• Develop relaying philosophies and configurations; oversee I/O and diagrams.
• Mentor junior and senior engineers; guide detailed design phases.
• Coordinate with engineers, project managers, clients, and suppliers.
• Review existing facilities to propose upgrades and present findings.
• Travel to client/vendor sites for reviews and field verification.
