Job summary

Custom Air Products & Services, Inc. (CAPS) is seeking a Lead Sheet Metal Mechanic to plan, coordinate, and perform fabrication, assembly, installation, and repair of sheet metal components and HVAC systems.

This role provides field leadership and technical guidance to crew members, ensuring safety, efficiency, and adherence to project specs. The incumbent will read blueprints, plan daily activities, fabricate and install ductwork and HVAC equipment, and supervise apprentices while maintaining

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required or preferred.
• Minimum 3–5 years of commercial/industrial sheet metal/HVAC installation experience.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, and specifications.
• Working knowledge of HVAC systems, ductwork installation and sheet metal fabrication.
• Ability to lead and direct crew members in a professional manner.

We are currently seeking a Lead Sheet Metal Mechanicto add to our growing team.

Position Summary & Objective

The Lead Sheet Metal Mechanic is responsible for planning, coordinating, and performing the fabrication, assembly, installation, and repair of sheet metal components and HVAC systems. This position provides field leadership and technical guidance to crew members while ensuring all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications, company standards, and applicable codes.

Key Responsibilities

• Read, interpret, and execute work from blueprints, shop drawings, specifications, and other project documents.
• Plan daily work activities and coordinate manpower, materials, tools, and equipment to meet project schedules.
• Measure, layout, fabricate, assemble, and install sheet metal ductwork and related HVAC components.
• Install HVAC equipment and components, including coils, heaters, compressors, control panels, dampers, and related systems.
• Determine project requirements, assembly sequences, installation methods, and material needs based on project specifications and field conditions.
• Drill, punch, cut, shape, and fasten sheet metal using hand tools, power tools, and fabrication equipment.
• Trim, grind, deburr, buff, and smooth metal surfaces, seams, and joints to ensure proper fit and finish.
• Inspect completed work to verify quality, accuracy, and compliance with company standards and project specifications.
• Provide leadership, coaching, and technical support to sheet metal mechanics and apprentices.
• Monitor productivity and address installation challenges while maintaining high-quality workmanship.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and jobsite requirements.
• Conduct and participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and jobsite inspections.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors, project managers, contractors, and other trades.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
• Complete required documentation, reports, and timekeeping records accurately and timely.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Skills

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Minimum of 3 to 5 years of commercial or industrial sheet metal/HVAC installation experience.
• Demonstrated ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, and specifications.
• Working knowledge of HVAC systems, ductwork installation, and sheet metal fabrication techniques.
• Ability to lead and direct crew members in a professional manner.
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation preferred.
• Ability to pass pre-employment and/or jobsite-specific screening requirements as applicable.

• Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
• Ability to use hand tools, power tools, measuring devices, and fabrication equipment safely and effectively.
• Basic mathematical skills, including measurements, fractions, and geometry calculations.

• Effective verbal communication and leadership skills.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

• Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull materials, tools, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to work overhead, at ground level, and in confined spaces.
• Ability to stand, walk, kneel, stoop, crouch, bend, climb ladders, and work from elevated surfaces for extended periods.
• Frequent use of hands, wrists, arms, and shoulders for gripping, reaching, and operating tools and equipment.
• Ability to work in varying weather conditions and construction environments.
• Commercial and industrial construction and service environments.
• Exposure to dust, noise, heat, cold, and other jobsite conditions.
• Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
