Job summary

Steel America, a unit of Colonna's Shipyard, seeks a 1st Class Rigger/Overhead Crane on 2nd shift in Norfolk, VA. You will assemble and operate rigging gear, cranes, and hoists to move heavy loads and secure them for transport and installation on ships and in yards.

You will read schematics, test weights per manuals, inspect equipment, coordinate with crane operators and teams, and mentor crew while handling multiple projects with safety as a priority.

Qualifications

• Must have at least 5 years of rigging experience in marine/shipyard environments or a completed registered apprenticeship in rigging.
• Must be able to operate overhead cranes.
• Must have forklift experience and be forklift-qualified.
• Must be able to climb and work at heights.
• Proficient with rigging gear, hoists, and cranes; know load calculations and rigging techniques.
• Ability to lift heavy materials, work in confined spaces, and read technical drawings/blueprints.

Responsibilities

• Assemble and set up rigging equipment to move and secure heavy loads.
• Conduct weight testing per manuals for cranes, davits, winches, anchors, and chains.
• Safely lift, move, and position heavy machinery in shipyards and aboard vessels.
• Read and interpret schematics to determine rigging techniques and equipment.
• Inspect rigging gear for wear and damage; perform maintenance as needed.
• Coordinate with crane operators and team members to ensure smooth operations.
• Maintain records of rigging operations and incidents.
