Job summary

Altru Health System in Grand Forks, ND, seeks a Supervisor Pre-Authorization & Referrals to lead the daily operations of the Pre-Authorization and Referral team. You will ensure timely, accurate insurance authorizations, referral processing, and payer-compliance to support patient access and revenue cycle integrity.

You will coach staff, plan staffing, and collaborate with clinical and payer teams to resolve issues, reduce denials, and promote exceptional service and efficiency.

Qualifications

• Requires Associates degree in Business/Finance/Healthcare or related field.
• Preferred: Bachelors degree in Business/Finance/Healthcare or related field.
• Minimum 3 years related experience.

Responsibilities

• Supervises pre-authorization and referral staff, including hiring, onboarding, training, scheduling, coaching, performance management, and staff meetings.
• Fosters a culture of accountability, collaboration, patient-centered service, and continuous improvement.
• Develops staffing plans to ensure adequate coverage, balanced workloads, and productivity, quality, and service targets.
• Oversees timely and accurate processing of insurance authorizations, prior authorizations, and specialty referrals per payer requirements.
• Monitors queues, workflows, and metrics to optimize turnaround times and reduce performance gaps.
• Identifies process gaps and implements improvements to enhance efficiency and patient experience.
• Collaborates with clinical departments, providers, scheduling, revenue cycle, and payer reps to resolve issues.
• Monitors denials/appeals and supports revenue cycle initiatives to minimize write-offs.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
