Job summary

Texas Wesleyan University is seeking a Lead New Student Mentor to support the Orientation team and guide a group of New Student Mentors through Ram Camp, Registration Days, and related orientation activities.

You will develop goals, provide day-to-day direction, attend trainings, and help new students transition to campus with welcoming service, strong communication, and collaboration with staff, faculty, and student organizations.

Qualifications

• Must be enrolled as a student in good standing at Texas Wesleyan University with a minimum 2.0 semester GPA and 2.5 cumulative GPA.
• Ability to attend mandatory trainings, New Student Registration Days, and Ram Camp sessions throughout the summer and academic year.

Job Title

Position Summary

The Lead New Student Mentor works as a member of the TXWES Orientation team and serves in an advanced peer-leadership role that helps further the mission and focus of the Division of Student Affairs. This position helps lead and mentor a team of New Student Mentors while assisting with the planning, development, and facilitation of New Student Registration Days, Ram Camp, and related Orientation and Transition Programs. The Lead New Student Mentor gains experience working across multiple areas of the division, develops short- and long-term programmatic goals, and helps incoming students transition successfully to Texas Wesleyan University through positive, professional, and welcoming service. The position also helps the student employee build advanced leadership, project management, and mentorship skills while supporting the university’s mission of student success.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Build relationships with new students to support their transition to Texas Wesleyan University, serving as an approachable, positive, and reliable point of contact throughout the orientation process.
• Lead and support a team of New Student Mentors by providing guidance, mentorship, and day-to-day direction throughout the orientation season.
• Lead a small group of new students throughout their orientation experience, guiding them through Ram Camp and New Student Registration Days activities and helping them build connections with peers.
• Assist in the maintenance and development of departmental projects, including Ram Camp programming, Registration Days logistics, the parent newsletter, social media content, and attendee spreadsheets.
• Attend and actively participate in all required trainings during the semester and summer, and all Orientation dates, including Ram Camp and mid-year and summer New Student Registration Days.
• Work with fellow New Student Mentors and Orientation staff to plan, coordinate, and carry out welcome weekend activities that help incoming students feel supported and included.
• Encourage and support students, student organizations, academic departments, and campus programs by promoting events and initiatives that benefit the student community and align with the university’s mission, and cultivate positive working relationships with staff, faculty, and students.
• Adhere to all university and departmental policies and guidelines, complete other assigned duties, and protect confidential student information in accordance with FERPA .

Education, Certifications and/or Licenses

• Must be enrolled as a student in good standing at Texas Wesleyan University, maintain a minimum semester GPA of 2.0 & cumulative GPA of 2.5 throughout the completion of the contract, and maintain eligibility for student employment in accordance with university policies.
• Ability to attend all mandatory trainings, New Student Registration Days, and Ram Camp sessions throughout the summer and academic year.

Experience

• Demonstrated experience in orientation, student leadership, event planning, or involvement in student organizations.
