Job summary

Upstart is seeking a Lead Legal Counsel, HELOC, to serve as the primary legal partner for our Home Equity Line of Credit product. You’ll work cross-functionally to provide strategic guidance through the product lifecycle and help the business launch and scale home lending solutions while managing regulatory risk.

This role reports to the Product & Regulatory Legal team and offers remote flexibility across the U.S., with collaboration across regulators, bank partners, and internal teams.

Qualifications

• JD from an accredited law school and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar.
• 7+ years of legal experience advising financial services, fintech, or mortgage lending organizations, including primary counsel for complex product teams.
• Deep expertise in consumer financial services laws and mortgage regulations (TILA, RESPA, ECOA, FCRA, HMDA, UDAAP).
• Experience advising cross-functional product development teams and supporting launches or expansions of regulated financial products.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic legal counsel to Product, Engineering, Risk, Compliance, and Operations teams for the HELOC product and related regulatory transitions.
• Advise on federal and state consumer lending laws and mortgage regulations impacting home lending products.
• Provide guidance on future products and regulatory change management.
• Partner with stakeholders to design compliant product features, experiences, processes, and servicing capabilities.
• Lead legal support for new product initiatives and market expansion in home lending.
• Collaborate with Privacy, Fair Lending, Capital Markets and Commercial contracts teams as needed.
• Engage with regulators, bank partners, and outside counsel on HELOC legal matters.
