Job summary

Upstart is hiring a Lead Legal Counsel, HELOC, to partner across Product & Regulatory Legal teams in supporting home equity lending initiatives. You’ll guide product lifecycle, regulatory compliance, and risk management for HELOC and related real estate secured products.

You will work cross‑functionally, advise regulators, and help scale innovative lending solutions while balancing business objectives with legal risk.

Qualifications

• JD from an accredited law school and active bar membership.
• 7+ years of legal experience advising financial services or mortgage lenders.
• Deep expertise in consumer financial services laws including TILA, RESPA, ECOA, FCRA, HMDA, UDAAP.
• Experience advising cross‑functional product teams on regulated financial products.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic legal counsel to Product, Engineering, Risk, Compliance, and Operations teams.
• Advise on federal and state consumer lending laws and mortgage regulations.
• Support future products including secured lending and regulatory change management.
• Lead product initiatives and coordinate with regulators, bank partners, and outside counsel.
• Identify key legal risks and communicate concise guidance to senior leadership.
