Job summary

City Housing Department seeks a Housing/Property Maintenance Official to supervise inspectors, enforce state and local building codes for residential housing, and manage the Rental Occupancy Program for code compliance.

The role requires extensive knowledge of housing codes, plan interpretation, and strong communication with property owners and other city departments. Travel and after-hours response may be required.

Qualifications

• Requires high school diploma or equivalent and ICC/VA Property Maintenance Inspector certification.
• Virginia Property Maintenance Official Certificate and at least five years as a Property Maintenance Inspector or related field.
• FEMA IS 100, 200, 700, 800 certifications required.
• Valid driver's license required.
• NCPCCI Elevator Certification within 12 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Supervises and manages the daily functions of the Property Maintenance Division.
• Inspects and enforces codes for housing and grounds around residential properties.
• Issues permits for home certification and coordinates with other departments.
• Testifies in court and maintains inspection records.
• Provides training on code enforcement and safety guidelines.
