Job summary

The City of Reading, PA is seeking a Property Maintenance Inspector to inspect existing residential and nonresidential structures and vacant lots to ensure compliance with Housing Codes. The position reports to the Property Maintenance Supervisor and requires daily interaction with residents and division staff.

Responsibilities include preparing inspection reports, scheduling re-inspections, pursuing violations in court when needed, and maintaining activity records.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • ICC Property Maintenance Inspector Certification (#64) must be obtained within six months.
  • PA driver’s license Class C with clean driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily inspection of all existing residential and nonresidential structures and vacant lots.
  • Conduct health inspections of food establishments when assigned (ServSafe certification mandatory or equivalent).
  • Prepare inspection reports and send copies to owners of dwellings in violation.
  • Make re-inspections after designated time to ensure compliance.
  • File prosecution with District judges if violations are not corrected.
  • Compile daily/weekly/monthly reports of inspections, violations, and corrections.
  • Act as public relations representative for City during inspections.
  • Investigate complaints and attend court hearings as necessary.
  • Learn and use the city’s computer equipment and software.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
