Job summary

City of Syracuse is seeking a Housing Inspector to inspect residential dwellings for compliance with local housing codes and NYS maintenance laws. The role entails documenting violations, coordinating with property owners and tenants, and providing testimony in housing court as required.

Responsibilities include reporting findings, coordinating with specialized inspectors when needed, and maintaining detailed electronic records of inspections and actions taken.

Qualifications

• Good knowledge of housing codes, ordinances and related laws.
• Ability to inspect residential structures for habitability.
• Proficient written and oral communication.
• Ability to function independently under supervision.

Responsibilities

• Perform inspections of interior and exterior of residential dwellings for structural soundness and code violations.
• Investigate complaints of code violations under Syracuse standards.
• Prepare inspection reports and document violations with photos when needed.
• Notify owners/tenants of violations and required remedial actions; follow up inspections.
• Appear in housing court to provide testimony on violations.
