Job summary

GFT in New York, NY is seeking a Senior Highway Designer to lead roadway engineering on complex transportation projects. This role follows a hybrid work model in our New York office, coordinating with NYSDOT, NYCDOT, PANYNJ and other agencies to deliver safe, sustainable infrastructure.

The ideal candidate has a Civil Engineering degree, 3+ years of highway design, and proficiency in MicroStation, OpenRoads, and AutoCAD. NY/NJ client experience and strong communication are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
• 3+ years highway/roadway design experience.
• Proficient in MicroStation and OpenRoads.
• NY/NJ client design experience (NYSDOT, NYCDOT, PANYNJ, NYSTA, MTA, NJDOT, NJTA).
• Strong verbal and written communication; client-facing experience.

Responsibilities

• Lead roadway design concepts, criteria, and technical direction on major tasks.
• Coordinate with bridge, transit, environmental, geotechnical, and civil/site teams.
• Prepare and review plans, specs, and estimates for roadway design elements.
• Review deliverables for QA/QC and quality.
• Mentor junior staff and oversee tasks.
• Support proposal development and cost estimates.
• Manage client-facing task orders and interface with clients.
• Assist with permitting coordination and submissions.
• Participate in professional societies and industry groups.
