Job summary

First Student is seeking a Lead Diesel Technician in San Rafael, CA, to lead preventive maintenance and development of technicians. This full-time day-shift role runs Monday–Friday, 6 am–3 pm, with an hourly wage of $46.45 under the union contract.

The position includes opportunities to earn more through ASE testing and new licenses. Responsibilities include diagnostics, road tests, and managing shop operations, inventories, safety, and budgets.

Qualifications

• At least 5 years of diesel or automotive maintenance & repair experience.
• Experience in a lead technician or supervisory role preferred.
• Valid driver's license; willing to obtain CDL during employment (paid training).
• Strong computer skills for diagnostics and maintenance records.
• Possess a mechanic’s tool set; ASE certifications preferred.

Responsibilities

• Oversee complex vehicle diagnostics and repairs.
• Perform road tests when needed.
• Maintain knowledge of engines, emissions, transmissions, brakes, hydraulics, electrical, and HVAC systems.
• Supervise shop technicians; conduct daily huddles, training, and evaluations.
• Manage inventory, approve expenses, schedule fleet maintenance, ensure safety compliance.
• Conduct inspections and monitor performance; liaise with management on budgets and projects.
• Participate in ASE certification program.
• Perform hands-on work as needed.
