Job summary

Blue Origin in California seeks an experienced Mechanical Engineer to own the deployment mechanism for the TeraWave solar array. You will lead design, analysis, prototyping, and qualification across a cross‑functional team to ensure spacecraft readiness and reliability for orbital deployment.

You will mentor junior engineers, drive fast cycles, and interface with SPM, PVA, and harness teams while adhering to space-grade standards and GD&T practices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Aerospace, or related field with 8+ years of experience.
  • Hands-on design and build of mechanical hardware, passive or active mechanisms preferred.
  • Prototyping and testing experience required.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as Responsible Engineer for the deployment mechanism design, analysis and qualification.
  • Lead the full design cycle from concept through qualification and production readiness.
  • Define deployment architecture and validation strategy including testing to prove space performance.
  • Hands-on prototyping and fast design iterations using actuators, motors, and instrumentation.
  • Perform kinematic, sizing, tolerance, and structural analyses as required.
  • Guide engineering teams for deployment sub-components and interfaces with other subsystems.
  • Own deployer interfaces with SPM, PVA, and harness subsystems and resolve interface conflicts.
  • Drive manufacturability and producibility to meet production rate, cost targets.
  • Create component and assembly drawings with GD&T per ASME Y14.5 and develop interface docs.
  • Conduct flight hardware testing (TVAC, modal, vibration, functional deployment).
  • Maintain deployer risk registers and DFMEA; manage issue resolution during integrate/test.
  • Collaborate across structural, thermal, electrical and manufacturing teams to deliver integrated mechanism.
