Essential Job Duties
- Provide guidance and instructions to temporary Line Station Cooks and student Cooks.
- Prepare food according to standardized recipes and specifications.
- Perform small batch cooking, display station setup and service, and transport cooked foods for line service.
- Support front of house operations with backup food to avoid lag time.
- Portion food prior to cooking according to standard sizes and recipes.
- Perform specialty tasks such as display setup, garnishing, recipe development, and event meal assistance.
- Check food temperatures, proper storage, and follow safety guidelines to prevent contamination and spoilage.
- Operate kitchen equipment safely as per manufacturer instructions.
- Maintain cleanliness of utensils, workspace, and equipment to achieve a Grade “A” Sanitation rating.
- Participate in recipe development and event meal assistance.
- Perform other duties as needed, including assisting in other locations.
Position Details
This is an hourly, temporary position with a 32-day mandated break after 11 months. High performance may lead to renewal or permanent opportunities.

NC State Dining provides diverse food services across campus, employing about 1000 temporary and student staff, and 190 permanent employees.

Work Schedule
Shifts vary from early morning to late nights, including weekends. Please specify your availability in the application. Both full- and part-time roles are available.
Minimum Experience/Education
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Relevant experience will also be considered.
Required Skills
- Previous cooking experience.
- Knowledge of equipment, cooking methods, measurements, food quality, and safety.
- Dependability and time management skills.
- Ability to work efficiently in a busy kitchen.
- Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
- Excellent customer service skills and professionalism under pressure.
- Ability to follow safety procedures, handle sharp and hot items, and work in hot/cold conditions.
- Physical ability to stand for long periods, lift up to 60 lbs, and perform related tasks.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Culinary Arts education (certificate, diploma, or degree).
- Two years of culinary experience.
- Proficiency in recipe preparation, short order, and high-volume cooking.
- Diverse culinary knowledge including meat fabrication, various cuisines, measurements, and knife skills.
- Understanding of food safety, sanitation, and ServSafe certification.
Additional Details
Anticipated hourly wage: $16.50.
