Job description

The Transportation, Engineering and Development Department (TED) at the City of Naperville is seeking an experienced Building Inspector to lead a team of up to 10 inspectors. This Lead Building Inspector will coordinate, oversee, and contribute to specialized building inspections during various construction stages to ensure compliance with City building codes and ordinances.

Compensation: The anticipated hiring range is $31.70 - $40.04 per hour, commensurate with experience. The pay grade is N11. For more information, click here.

Responsibilities:
  1. Lead a team of Building Inspectors and conduct annual performance evaluations.
  2. Schedule, coordinate, and monitor field investigations.
  3. Provide field support and technical assistance.
  4. Maintain knowledge of permit and inspection management software.
  5. Lead project meetings regarding inspection schedules and issues.
  6. Inform supervisor of field activities and issues.
  7. Perform inspections of commercial and residential buildings for code compliance.
  8. Maintain inspection logs, records, and files.
  9. Investigate and resolve inspection issues.
  10. Respond to inquiries from the public and City staff.
  11. Coordinate job site communications.
  12. Train and mentor new Inspectors.
  13. Coordinate ongoing training and education.
  14. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Credentials and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Technical training or education from a vocational school
  • At least five years of increasing responsibility in construction inspections or related field
  • Valid Illinois Driver’s License
Preferred Credentials and Experience:
  • Associate’s degree
  • Professional construction-related certification
  • ICC Residential Building Inspector Certification
  • ICC Commercial Building Inspector Certification
