Job summary

United States Postal Service in Virginia District seeks a Lead Automotive Technician to supervise lower level technicians in a vehicle maintenance facility. You will perform complex repairs on postal fleet vehicles and guide staff on diagnostics and use of computer-aided diagnostic equipment.

The role requires safety compliance, record-keeping, and ensuring timely maintenance with emphasis on emissions systems, electrical components, and drivability.

Qualifications

  • Observe, test, analyze, and isolate sources of trouble in automotive systems or components using appropriate test equipment.
  • Knowledge of and proficiency with electrical/electronic diagnostic equipment such as VAT, multimeters, test lights, scanners, and gas analyzers.
  • Replace parts, make adjustments, and rebuild systems or components such as electrical/ignition, emissions, fuel delivery, engine, suspension, power train, braking, etc.
  • Record information and complete forms such as parts requests and estimated repair time (E.R.T.).
  • Work safely and efficiently with fellow employees to test and repair electrical/electronic and mechanical problems.
  • Plan and execute work activities safely and efficiently without direct supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose operating difficulties on a variety of vehicles and perform checks on engines and major systems.
  • Perform computerized and electronic diagnostic tests and interpret trouble codes using manuals and schematics.
  • Conduct road tests before and after maintenance and repairs; annotate vehicle problems on work orders.
  • Troubleshoot malfunctioning vehicles from road calls and identify faulty parts.
  • Maintain vehicle maintenance records, including repairs and labor hours.
  • Provide guidance to technicians on difficult repairs and CAD/electronic equipment use.
  • Observe safety practices and comply with environmental regulations.
