Job summary

Appian is seeking a Lead Applied AI Engineer to serve as the technical linchpin for building AI systems that reason about enterprise applications end to end. You will work on agents, orchestration, specification extraction, and rigorous evaluation, shaping enterprise-grade solutions.

You will mentor peers, influence technical docs, and drive performance and scale across the platform. This remote-US role offers substantial ownership and growth opportunities.

Qualifications

• BS in CS or a related discipline.
• 7+ years of software development experience with a BS (or 5+ years with MS).
• Strong distributed-systems background with retries, idempotency, partial failure, long-running tasks, and recovery.
• Strong software engineering, data-pipeline, and observability skills.
• Experience using AI coding assistants in production context.
• Excellent ability to communicate highly technical architectures to diverse audiences.

Responsibilities

• Develop production AI systems with hands-on technical presence.
• Design reliable agents and orchestration with safe, permission-aware boundaries.
• Extract requirements and executable specs from source, metadata, tests, and runtime behavior, and map them onto Appian's object model.
• Model the semantic and dependency retrieval that give AI context across large application estates.
• Build evaluation and CI pipelines that gate quality and catch regressions.
• Use AI coding tools to ship faster without compromising quality or correctness.
• Engineer reliability, latency, and efficiency into core systems at enterprise scale.
• Coach and guide junior engineers to accelerate technical growth.
• Share expertise across the department and publish to Engineering's documentation site.
