Job summary

Appian seeks a Principal Applied AI Engineer to anchor applied AI efforts, designing and operating production LLM systems while guiding engineering direction beyond the immediate squad.

You will architect and deliver high-complexity AI systems—code generation, agents, retrieval, and structured generation—driving observable, reliable enterprise-grade orchestration and mentoring engineers across the team.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or related technical discipline required.
• 10+ years of relevant software development experience (BS) or 8+ years with MS.
• Production LLM systems design and operation experience.
• Expertise across code generation, agents, retrieval, structured generation, tool use, model routing, evaluation, and observability.
• AI-augmented development: experience with AI coding assistants and production context.

Responsibilities

• Develop high-performance production LLM systems and maintain a strong technical presence on the team.
• Lead platform modernization to keep the codebase and AI systems up-to-date and performant.
• Utilize AI coding tools for code generation, review, and quality assurance.
• Drive architectural design and delivery across complex AI-powered layers from scope to implementation.
• Build prototypes to de-risk novel AI approaches and set engineering standards.
• Ensure reliability, latency, scalability, and efficiency of core software systems.
