Job summary

EY is seeking a high-impact Applied AI Engineer to build and supervise long-running, enterprise-grade agents that operate across complex workflows with clearly defined contracts and safety checks. You’ll shape execution loops, tools, and context while ensuring steerability, observability, and resilient operation in production.

The role sits within the Challenger program, collaborating with cross‑functional teams to deliver scalable AI solutions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field of study.
• 7-9 years of experience in software or applied machine-learning engineering, with ownership of production systems and their live behavior.
• Hands-on evidence of shipping large-language-model applications, agents, or complex model-driven workflows used for real work.
• Strong capability in Python, TypeScript, or another language used for production services and integrations.
• Experience with model APIs, structured outputs, retrieval, tool use, and evaluation of variable behavior.
• Practical command of asynchronous work, state, concurrency, idempotency, retries, and failure recovery.
• Experience implementing access boundaries and scoped authority for applications or automated workloads.
• Evidence of improving live systems through traces, metrics, logs, incident analysis, and durable remediation.
• Travel and On-site requirements: This role requires up to 50% travel and flexibility to go into the office in a hybrid capacity.

Responsibilities

• Choose the right execution model and architect systems for reliable results.
• Build dependable tools with clear contracts and safe error handling.
• Engineer agent behavior across planning, routing, delegation, retry, and handoff.
• Create durable context with memory, retrieval, and access control while preserving provenance.
• Bound agent authority with scoped identities and budgets.
• Evaluate complete trajectories with tests for verified outcomes and recovery.
• Operate long-running execution with durable state and graceful degradation.
• Make behavior observable via traces and replay for improvements.
• Protect user control with intervention points and safe resumption.
• Build shared capability by partnering across teams and publishing reusable patterns.
