Job summary

County of Hawai‘i seeks a Planning Assistant to review building permit applications and architectural and cadastral plans for compliance with the Zoning Code. The position handles simple to moderate residential and commercial reviews and processes subdivision and zoning applications in Hilo.

In this full-time role, you will provide information to applicants, direct them to the proper agencies for clearances, maintain records, and assist in more complex plan reviews as needed.

Qualifications

• High school graduation is required.
• Two years of experience in reviewing building plans and specs for compliance with laws, codes, and ordinances.

Responsibilities

• Receives architectural and cadastral plans, building permit and sign applications, and subdivision and zoning applications over the counter.
• Checks applications for accuracy and completeness; reviews plans and permits for conformance to county ordinances.
• Examines plans to ensure setback, height, use, floor area, recreation, and other Zoning Code requirements are met.
• Approves plans and permits as authorized after review.
• Receives and processes complaints of zoning violations and refers to staff for investigation.
• Provides information to the public on planning laws, rules, and departmental activities.
• Directs applicants to agencies to secure necessary clearances.
• Maintains subdivision and planning permit files; updates tax map keys.
• Assists in reviewing complex plans and may train lower-level staff.
