County of Hawai‘i seeks a Planning Assistant to review building permit applications and architectural and cadastral plans for compliance with the Zoning Code. The position handles simple to moderate residential and commercial reviews and processes subdivision and zoning applications in Hilo.
In this full-time role, you will provide information to applicants, direct them to the proper agencies for clearances, maintain records, and assist in more complex plan reviews as needed.
Performs counter work in reviewing building permit applications and architectural and cadastral plans for conformance to the Zoning Code and other applicable laws, rules, and regulations; reviews and approves as authorized building permits for simple to moderately complex residential and commercial structures; receives subdivision and zoning applications; and performs other related duties as required. This level is distinguished by its primary responsibility for reviewing and approving as authorized simple to moderately complex plans and applications for residential and commercial structures. There is one (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy with the Planning Department - Administrative Permits Division in Hilo. The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.
All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application.

General provisions of county planning laws, rules and regulations; general provisions of the Zoning Code and other related ordinances; urban planning terminology; the building permitting process; simple drafting; office practices and procedures; and basic software applications such as email, word processing, spreadsheets, etc.
Read, understand, interpret and apply various laws, ordinances, rules and regulations pertinent to county planning activities; read construction plans and maps; make accurate arithmetic computations; operate and maintain standard office machines and equipment; deal courteously and effectively with the public; and work harmoniously with others.
