Job summary

Mercy is seeking a qualified lactation nurse to provide support and education to mothers and families within the hospital setting.

The role requires an RN with a current license, a CLC certification, and CPR certification, with at least 1 year of experience. Flexibility for rotating shifts and collaboration with Family Resource Center is essential.

Qualifications

  • Education: Graduate of an approved nursing education program.
  • Licensure: Current RN licensure with the State Board of Nursing or current RN temporary work permit.
  • Experience: 1 year of experience minimum.
  • Certification: Must have Certified Lactation Consultant (CLC). Must have a current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR or equivalent.
  • Other: Strong interpersonal and clinical skills; ability to multitask and adapt to rotating schedules.

Responsibilities

  • Provide lactation support, education, and assistance to mothers and families.
  • Initiate and maintain regular contact with mothers during the baby's hospital stay to support breastfeeding.
  • Coordinate post-discharge outpatient lactation care with Family Resource Center and Outpatient Lactation Services.
  • Serve as a clinical education resource related to lactation for hospital staff.
  • Collaborate with nursing and ancillary teams to optimize patient care and comfort.
  • Represent Mercy at community activities, outreach, and educational programs.
  • Maintain flexibility in scheduling to ensure required patient contact, including weekends/evenings.

Initiates and maintains regular contact with mothers throughout the baby's hospital stay to help support their breastfeeding experience. Provides post-discharge outpatient care and services through coordination with Family Resource Center and Outpatient Lactation Services. Works closely with staff to facilitate provisions of lactation support services and education throughout Mercy. Represents Mercy at community activities, outreach, and educational programs. Must have flexibility in scheduling to assure required contact with patients. Awareness of direct patient care activities for neonatal age groups to include assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Coordinates patient care activities with nursing and ancillary departments to optimize patient care and comfort. Functions within the scope of nursing preparation and consistent with the established guidelines of nursing practice, the goals of Mercy, the philosophy of the Sisters of Mercy, the Missouri Nurse Practice Act, the Code of Professional and Business Ethics and the Employee Code of Conduct. Performs related duties as assigned. Performs duties and responsibilities in the manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards.

Must have the ability to multitask and be flexible in routines. Working Conditions, Mental and Physical Requirements: stand and walk most of the time on duty. Meet unit specific physical demands. May be required to work differing schedules, shifts, days of the week, or work frequency according to client requirements--will work rotating weekends and some evening shifts in Family Resource Center. Equipment Used: Unit specific.

Preferred Education: BSN

Preferred Experience: Prefer experience in mother/baby care
