Job summary

Mercy is seeking an RN lactation consultant to provide lactation support and education to new mothers and families during hospitalization. The role includes coordinating post-discharge outpatient lactation services and serving as a resource for staff.

The successful candidate will have an approved nursing education background, RN licensure, and be working toward or possess CLC certification, with CPR training. Flexibility in scheduling and rotating shifts is required to meet patient needs.

Qualifications

  • RN licensure in state is required.
  • Certification as a Certified Lactation Consultant (CLC) must be obtained within two years of hire.
  • CPR certification or equivalent is required within probation period.

Responsibilities

  • Provide lactation support, education, and assistance to mothers and families.
  • Initiate and maintain contact with mothers during baby's hospital stay to support breastfeeding.
  • Coordinate post-discharge outpatient care with Family Resource Center and Outpatient Lactation Services.
  • Serve as a clinical and education resource related to lactation for staff.
  • Collaborate with nursing and ancillary departments to optimize patient care and comfort.

Works closely with staff to facilitate provisions of lactation support services and education throughout Mercy. Represents Mercy at community activities, outreach, and educational programs. Must have flexibility in scheduling to assure required contact with patients. Awareness of direct patient care activities for neonatal age groups to include assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Coordinates patient care activities with nursing and ancillary departments to optimize patient care and comfort. Functions within the scope of nursing preparation and consistent with the established guidelines of nursing practice, the goals of Mercy, the philosophy of the Sisters of Mercy, the Missouri Nurse Practice Act, the Code of Professional and Business Ethics and the Employee Code of Conduct. Performs related duties as assigned. Performs duties and responsibilities in the manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards.

  • Education: Graduate of an approved nursing education program.
  • Licensure: Current RN licensure with the State Board of Nursing or current RN temporary work permit.
  • Experience: None.
  • Certifications: Certification as a Certified Lactation Consulltant (CLC) must be obtained within two years of date of hire or transfer. Must have a current American Heart Association healthcare Provider Care or complete a course within their probation period.
  • Other: Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: demonstrated clinical expertise in their area of responsibility. Demonstrated skill in interpersonal relations and communications. Must have the ability to multitask and be flexible in routines. Working Conditions, Mental and Physical Requirements: stand and walk most of the time on duty. Meet unit specific physical demands. May be required to work differing schedules, shifts, days of the week, or work frequency according to client requirements--will work rotating weekends and some evening shifts in Family Resource Center. Equipment Used: Unit specific.
