Job summary

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Pathology is seeking a Laboratory Technician I for full-time work on the Downtown Campus. Under direct supervision, you will perform basic laboratory duties, collect specimens via fingerstick and phlebotomy, and help maintain equipment and records.

Responsibilities include data entry, handling specimens, and assisting with equipment assembly. Schedule is full-time; on-campus work modality applies. Equal opportunity employer.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of care and use of laboratory equipment.
  • Knowledge of sanitation, health hazards, and precautionary measures.
  • Knowledge of standard cleaning techniques and equipment.
  • Knowledge of keyboarding and data entry skills.
  • Ability to bend and lift safely.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to collect data and prepare reports.
  • Ability to operate computerized inventory systems.
  • Ability to use and care for maintenance tools.
  • Ability to prepare chemical solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Perform simple and repetitive tests on environmental samples or biological specimens.
  • Record data from standard laboratory equipment.
  • Prepare simple chemical solutions for media, reagents, and drugs.
  • Perform routine cleaning and preventative maintenance in a small lab area.
  • Receive and distribute mail, supplies, specimens and reports.
  • Assemble/dismantle experimental equipment and assist with building complex equipment.
  • Maintain supplies and equipment for the lab area.
  • Enter data to label and process laboratory specimens.
  • Respond to telephone inquiries regarding specimens; resolve minor questions.
  • Procure/collect specimens using fingerstick and phlebotomy techniques.
