Job summary

University of Iowa Health Care, Mission Cancer & Blood, Des Moines, IA, is seeking a Phlebotomy Technician I to perform phlebotomy and related tasks under direct supervision. This part-time, on-campus position emphasizes safety, accuracy in specimen collection, and EMR/LIS processes.

You will obtain blood specimens, label tubes, perform basic testing, and maintain records in compliance with CLIA and internal policies, contributing to quality patient care.

Qualifications

• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to communicate effectively with others.
• Knowledge of care and use of laboratory equipment.
• Knowledge of principles of sanitation, health hazards, and the necessary precautionary measures
• Knowledge of standard cleaning techniques and equipment and supplies required
• Ability to collect patient data and maintain accurate records
• Knowledge of keyboarding and computer data entry skills

Responsibilities

• Adhere to safety procedures to prevent infection.
• Explain phlebotomy procedures to patients and families in a professional manner.
• Identify patients using standard procedures.
• Verify, complete, and resolve orders in the EMR.
• Label specimens and prepare tubes in LIS.
• Obtain blood specimens using established drawing techniques.
• Centrifuge tubes to obtain serum/plasma for testing.
• Perform moderate complexity, point-of-care, and waived testing.
• Assist with collection, labeling, and transportation of other specimens.
• Record results per policies and regulations.
• Perform quality control to maintain compliance.
• Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment.
• Maintain equipment and instruments per procedures and manufacturer’s instructions.
• Maintain records for proficiency testing and meet CLIA requirements.
• Perform all other duties as assigned.
