Job summary

Yale New Haven Health Services Corp. seeks an experienced Laboratory Outreach Technician to support outpatient specimen collection operations.

You will register specimens, order tests, label and process samples, and ensure timely delivery of patient results while maintaining safety and accuracy in a fast-paced environment. Ideal candidates have 1–3 years in healthcare, strong communication skills, and familiarity with lab procedures.

Qualifications

• High school graduate required; Medical Terminology preferred.
• One to three years experience in a healthcare environment preferred; keyboarding skills required.
• Familiarity with general laboratory procedures (e.g., centrifugation, specimen handling) is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Registers specimens and ensures complete information.
• Requests laboratory tests in computer systems with correct coding.
• Identifies, labels, and processes specimens; creates batches as needed.
• Prioritizes specimens during peak workload for timely processing.
• Monitors specimen tracking and shipping batches; follows up on missing/overdue specimens.
• Adheres to safety procedures for equipment and hazardous materials.
• Answers calls with proper telephone etiquette and resolves inquiries.
• Addresses failed fax or scheduled report printer issues with IT or staff.
• Disseminates patient results as requested by customers.
• Receives orders for laboratory services via telephone/fax and processes requisitions.
• Creates and maintains manifests and home draw work orders for home-bound patients.
• Responds to requests for stat services and delegates to outreach phlebotomists.
• Dispatches courier services and client supply requests timely.
• Meets performance expectations for customer service and teamwork.
