Job summary

Yale New Haven Health is seeking a Laboratory Technician to handle processing, mailing, and result reporting of specimens sent to outside reference laboratories. The role coordinates patient specimens across Chemistry, Special Chemistry, and Serology laboratories, ensuring accurate labeling and timely shipments.

Responsibilities include preparing shipping batches, charting results, maintaining supplies, and assisting staff in selecting correct reference lab tests.

Qualifications

• 1 year experience in data entry.
• Familiarity with general laboratory procedures (e.g. centrifugation, specimen handling) is preferred.
• Excellent communication skills are necessary.

Responsibilities

• Centrifuges, aliquots and labels blood specimens for mail-out to reference laboratories.
• Processes and labels lab outreach specimens for Blood Bank, Chemistry Hematology and Microbiology.
• Requests correct reference lab tests in LIS or on reference lab requisitions.
• Prepares specimens requiring special handling according to reference lab test specifications.
• Prepares laboratory information system shipping batches.
• Charts reference lab results and files department paperwork.
• Maintains inventory of department and reference lab supplies.
• Assists computer operators, phlebotomists, and lab clients in the interpretation of MD orders for correct reference lab test selection.
• Prioritizes specimens during peak workload to ensure timely processing, mailout and result reporting.
• Collaborates with co-workers in the department regarding workload and problem resolution.
• Checks pending logs and shipping batches and follows up on missing/overdue tests.
• Safely operates department equipment according to manufacturer guidelines.
• Meets performance expectations for customer service, teamwork, resource utilization, and development.
• Performs other duties to ensure smooth operation of the department/unit.
