Job description

Xaira is an innovative biotech startup focused on leveraging AI to transform drug discovery and development. About the Job

As a Lab Operations Specialist, you will ensure the smooth and efficient operation of our laboratory facilities by playing a key role in maintaining laboratory equipment, managing inventory, and implementing safety protocols. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in a fast-paced biotech setting, demonstrating proficiency in maintaining lab equipment, overseeing lab supplies inventory, and implementing standard operating procedures (SOPs). Key skills include strong organizational abilities, meticulous attention to detail, effective communication, and the capability to troubleshoot technical issues swiftly. The role demands a proactive approach to improving lab efficiency and supporting scientific teams to drive innovative research and development efforts.

About the Role

  • Inventory Management:
    • Receive packages daily and update receipts in purchasing system
    • Assist with shipping orders out as needed
    • Manage laboratory inventory, including reagents, consumables, and other lab supplies
  • Equipment Maintenance:
    • Conduct routine maintenance on general lab equipment such as water baths, incubators, and biosafety cabinets
    • Work with our team to support other equipment as needed
  • Safety Compliance:
    • Manage waste streams and manifests, including both biohazard and chemical waste
    • Collaborate with science staff on adherence to safety protocols and guidelines to maintain a safe working environment for laboratory personnel
    • Partner with EHS to provide training to laboratory staff on proper handling of hazardous materials and emergency procedures
  • Facilities Management:
    • Collaborate with Lab Management to implement lab systems that create operational readiness, enhance safety, and improve efficiency in laboratory activities
    • Oversee the cleanliness and organization of laboratory spaces, including shared work areas and storage rooms

Qualifications

  • Associates degree with 3+ years of experience or Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific field (e.g., biology, chemistry, bioengineering) with at least 1 year of work experience
  • Prior experience in laboratory operations, preferably in a biotechnology or life sciences industry
  • Strong technical skills with the ability to troubleshoot laboratory equipment and perform basic repairs
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of California State and Federal safety regulations and best practices in laboratory operations
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high-quality standards in all aspects of laboratory operations
  • Proactive mindset with a strong commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement
  • Flexibility to respond to emergencies or off-hours maintenance needs as required
  • Proficiency in computer applications such as Microsoft Office and Google Suite
  • Previous biotech startup experience
  • Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and inventory management software
  • Certification in laboratory safety or facility management
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements (e.g., FDA, ISO) applicable to biotechnology research and development

Compensation

A Summary of Benefits is available for all applicants. We offer a competitive package that includes base salary, bonus, and equity. The base pay range for this position is expected to be $85,000 - $112,738 annually; however, the base pay offered may vary depending on the market, job-related knowledge, skills and capabilities, and experience.
