Job summary

Tigg's Canteen Services is seeking a dependable Temporary Full-Time Lead Cook for the Porter County Jail in Valparaiso, Indiana. The role leads daily kitchen operations, directs inmates and staff, and ensures adherence to recipes and food safety in a structured correctional setting.

Starting pay is $21.00 per hour with medical, dental, vision, 401K, and PTO benefits. Flexible weekend/holiday scheduling and required facility clearance are part of the position.

Responsibilities

What You'll Do

As a Kitchen Manager, you will help oversee daily kitchen operations while working directly with inmates assigned to the food service area. Responsibilities include:

• Leading, directing, and assisting inmates within the kitchen
• Leading and instructing kitchen staff and inmates during meal preparation
• Assisting with food preparation, baking, cooking, and clean-up
• Following company recipes and established food service procedures
• Maintaining a safe, organized, and productive kitchen environment
• Working effectively within a structured correctional setting
• Performing physical tasks, including lifting up to 50 pounds

Successful candidates should have:

• A high school diploma or equivalent
• Strong leadership and communication skills
• The ability to work well in a structured correctional environment
• The ability to read and follow company recipes
• The ability to lead, instruct, and assist with kitchen and meal preparation duties

Schedule & Requirements

• Temporary Full-Time position
• Must be flexible to work weekends and holidays
• Must be flexible to work varying days and hours
• Typical shift times fall between 8:30 AM and 6:30 PM
• Must receive clearance approval to enter the facility
