Kaempf & Harris, a sheet metal and mechanical contractor based in Frederick, Maryland, is seeking an Assistant Estimator. This role supports the estimating department by preparing accurate, competitive bids for commercial sheet metal and HVAC ductwork projects.

You will review drawings, perform takeoffs, obtain vendor pricing, and prepare estimates. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, technically inclined, and comfortable with computers.

Qualifications

• Strong attention to detail.
• Ability to read mechanical drawings and specifications.
• Willingness to learn commercial HVAC ductwork systems and sheet metal takeoff procedures.
• Prior sheet metal or estimating experience is helpful but not required.

Responsibilities

• Assist estimators with ductwork estimates.
• Review drawings, specifications, addenda, and bid documents.
• Identify key requirements in project specs and build each estimate around required construction.
• Write scopes of work that define inclusions and exclusions.
• Enter takeoff quantities, labor, material, and pricing into estimating software; build Excel spreadsheets.
• Communicate with vendors and follow up on quotes.

PositionSummary

TheAssistantEstimatorsupportstheestimatingdepartmentinpreparingaccurate,competitivebidsforcommercialsheetmetalandHVACductworkprojects.Thisincludesreviewingmechanicaldrawingsandspecifications,performingductworkandsheetmetaltakeoffs,obtainingvendorpricing,organizingbidinformation,andpreparingestimates.

Theidealcandidateisdetail-oriented,technicallyinclined,comfortableworkingatacomputerforextendedperiods,andabletolearnestimatingandtakeoffsoftware.Priorsheetmetalorestimatingexperienceishelpfulbutnotrequired—wewillteachyouwhatyouneedtoknow.Whatmattersmostisastrongwillingnesstolearnandtheabilitytoretainandapplywhatyouaretaught.Thisrolecallsforaself-motivatedpersonwithastrongworkethicwhocanstayproductivewithminimaldirectsupervision.

Thegoalofthispositionistobuildtheknowledgeandexperienceneededtotakeonincreasingestimatingresponsibilitiesand,ultimately,managesheetmetalestimatesindependently.

Compensation

$25-$28perhour,dependingonexperience.

PrimaryResponsibilities

• Assistestimatorswithductworkestimates.
• Reviewmechanicaldrawings,specifications,addenda,andbiddocuments.
• Identifykeyrequirementsinprojectspecificationsandbuildeachestimatearoundtherequiredconstruction.
• Writescopesofworkthatclearlydefineinclusionsandexclusionsforeachproject.
• Entertakeoffquantities,labor,material,andpricingintoestimatingsoftware,andbuildsupportingExcelspreadsheets.
• Communicate,buildrelationships,andfollowupwithvendors.
• Obtainvendorequipmentquotesaheadofbiddeadlines.
• Trackbiddates,addenda,drawingrevisions,andotherchangesthroughoutthebiddingprocess.
• Holdturnovermeetingswithprojectmanagersafterprojectsareawarded.
• Attendpre-bidmeetings,sitevisits,andjobwalksasneeded.
