Job summary

Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges is seeking a Junior Camp Counselor to assist Counselors and Senior Counselors in supervising campers. You will help children adjust to camp rules and safety, build friendships, and support camp leadership in all activities.

The role emphasizes enthusiasm, positive redirection, and commitment to YMCA values as you engage in learning environments and external trips. Strong communication with families is valued.

Qualifications

• Understanding of youth development principles.
• Strong interpersonal skills with staff, parents and youth.
• Knowledge of horse care and riding where applicable.
• Familiarity with low and high ropes courses and teambuilding activities.
• Experience with outdoor activities like hiking, canoeing, or biking.
• Creative, energetic, problem-solving mindset aligned with YMCA values.
• Ability to relate to children and build positive relationships.
• 1-3 years of group leadership experience.
• Team player with risk awareness and initiative.
• First Aid, CPR, AED certification may be required.

Responsibilities

• Assist counselors in supervising campers in small and large groups.
• Supervise campers in the dining hall and in cabin settings.
• Learn campers' names and consistently greet them with respect and enthusiasm.
• Develop positive relationships with families and learn why they come to our Y.
• Assist in carrying out camp themes, special events, trips and activities.
• Encourage camper growth and youth development progress.
• Follow all safety, sign-in/out policies and attendance procedures.
• Attend required staff meetings and trainings and uphold safety standards.
• Uphold YMCA core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility in daily activities.
• Create a positive learning environment and maintain camp cleanliness.
