Job summary

Metro YMCAs seeks a Senior Camp Counselor to supervise and guide groups of children during camp days. You will plan activities, maintain safety, and support camp leadership while fostering a warm, inclusive environment.

You’ll build positive camper relationships, learn families’ needs, and assist with events, trips and themes. This role emphasizes teamwork, youth development, and adherence to YMCA values and safety policies.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma, college credits/degree in Education preferred.
• Basic understanding of youth development principles.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communication with all levels including staff, parents and staff.
• Knowledge and expertise in horse care and riding as applicable.
• Knowledge of low and high ropes courses, teambuilding and climbing as applicable.
• Knowledge of hiking, canoeing, biking or other high adventure activities as applicable.
• Ability to facilitate learning in others and ability to supervise others.
• Ability to be creative, innovative, flexible with high energy. Ability to problem solve and take initiative that adhere to the purpose, mission and goals of the YMCA.
• Ability to relate to children and develop professional, positive relationships with youth.
• Understanding age specific characteristics of children and positive behavior management techniques.
• 1-3 years’ experience leading and supervising group activities.
• Ability to work as part of a team, as a role model and take initiative to identify potential risk factors and take measures to reduce them.
• First Aid, CPR and AED certification may be required.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and engage campers throughout camp days.
• Plan and deliver activities and support the Camp Director and Specialist.
• Maintain professional demeanor and represent the YMCA.
• Be a positive role model and foster youth development.
• Uphold YMCA core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility.
• Attend staff meetings and required trainings.
• Ensure safety and follow risk management policies.
• Supervise campers in dining hall and cabin settings.
• Learn campers' names and build relationships with families.
• Assist with themes, events, trips and camp activities.
• Create a positive learning environment and promote healthy living.
